Mosquito Facts

There are severe species of mosquito that inhabit the United States. Although Mosquitos can transmit disease, there are only a relatively small number of species that can transmit diseases. Mosquitos go through four distinct stages in their life cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. In most cases, the adult female Mosquito will lay her eggs in stagnant water and others will lay their eggs near stagnant water’s edge. Stagnant water sources can include a pond, puddle, storm drains, bird baths, clogged gutters, on top of pool cover and more.

Only the adult female Mosquito bite and need a blood meal for every batch of eggs that he has. One very important point to note is that Mosquito eggs can survive several years before hatching. So if the eggs do not have water in order to hatch into the next life cycle stage, if a water source is introduced a few years down the road, those eggs will still survive.

Mosquito Habitat

Water is the key attractant for larger populations of mosquitoes. The key to a long term successful Mosquito program is to eliminate standing water. Turning over bird baths, flipping over plant saucers, kids toys, wheel barrels, making sure your trash cans drain and any other object that captures water. It is also important to make sure that your gutters are cleaned so that water cannot accumulate. If items that collect water can be removed, the items need to have drainage holes in the lowest area of the items to ensure proper drainage and standing water will not collect.

Other locations that can be breeding grounds for Mosquitos beaches clubs, campgrounds, golf courses, restaurants with outdoor dining, outdoor arenas and stages, parks, picnic grounds, playgrounds, pools, race tracks, riding stables, sports fields, stadiums, outdoor trails and more.
