Most of us have had numerous encounters with flies — swatting them away from food at an outdoor barbecue, or trying to keep them out of our faces when we are on a nature walk. But do you know the facts about them? Learn more about them and how to prevent them from your Ocean County property now with help from the experts here at Alliance Pest Services.

What are Flies?

There are many types of flies in existence. Depending on the species, they can live from eight days to up to a year. There are more than 160,000 species of flies located worldwide. Female flies can lay more than one million eggs at a time.

Flies are notorious for carrying diseases, and can spread salmonella, E. coli and other potentially deadly pathogens. They have been known to contribute in the contraction of many diseases in humans and pets, including:

  • typhoid fever
  • cholera
  • hepatitis
  • meningitis
  • dysentery
  • and more

Because flies are full of bacteria, if they are able to land on an eating utensil for even a moment, they can cause illness such as food poisoning, diarrhea and other maladies.

One the more common pests are dubbed ‘house flies.’ These flies are attracted to rotting food such as meat and vegetables. They may congregate around trash cans, but can also be seen around fruit, and possible spilled soda, alcohol and coffee.

Flies prefer moist, dark areas to lay eggs. It is important to ensure trash is regularly removed from inside your home, and that spills are cleaned up, to prevent attracting flies and providing them a breeding ground.

Scientists cite an ecological impact of flies, because they are known to eat the dead bodies of animals and decaying materials. They are also a food source for other insects, as well as reptiles and other animals.

How to Prevent Flies

There are many ways to prevent flies from entering your home. Screening is a good first step. You may also try using other methods, such as fly strips.

It is often difficult to completely eliminate the potential for flies entering your home, however, and often times the areas where flies breed go undetected by the naked eye. A qualified and trained professional is able to help you detect where flies live inside your home, how they are entering in the first place, and methods by which to eliminate a possible infestation, as well as prevent pest troubles in the future.

To ensure your home is free from these pests, however, it is best to eliminate the guesswork and call a licensed professional to investigate a potential infestation at your home.
