The spring brings us sunshine, warm weather and blooming plants, but also attracts many fastidious and destructive insects. Just as the seasons change, so do the pests that inhabit our homes and gardens. Autumn and winter are the best times for rodents, bugs, and fleas, while spring and summer are characterized by the presence of stinging insects, to name a few.

Pests are bacteria, microbes, insects and even animals that are potential transmitters of diseases and allergies that can affect the health of both man and a pet. Pests usually attack the plants to feed themselves and to use them as hosts for breeding purposes, causing severe damage and often the death of the bonsai. Most often the pests are visible to the naked eye, such as aphids. Many insects, when attacking plants, also release a toxin that damages and inhibits their growth and development.

Pests cause an attack that affects the plant tissue causing symptoms of rust or necrotic spots (black spots) or rotting and wilt in the plant. They can also cause irreversible damage and death of plants; springtime pests do not only attack plants, but they also transmit diseases to man. Although not all are carriers of diseases, most can cause diseases such as rabies, salmonellosis, toxoplasmosis, diarrhea, fevers, among others.

There are a variety of pests that make human life complicated, and people have fought against the proliferation of these in their social environments. In turn, pests also represent a danger to the economic heritage of society because their presence can damage the structures of buildings, planting crops and even appliances.

These pests can cause significant damage to plants if they are not detected and controlled in time. Pests can cause both direct and indirect harm. Directly generate damage where they have sucked the leaves because their saliva has phytotoxic effects. Indirectly, they are transmitters of important viral diseases.

Common Pests In Spring

Spring disturbs the tranquility and safety of our homes and workspaces. Temperatures soar, days have more hours of light, and the plagues begin to increase. There are damages, both to material and health.

  • Ants
  • Ticks
  • Bees
  • Flies
  • Wasps
  • Hornets
  • Mosquitoes

As the weather gets warmer, it is the most common times for people to go away on vacations and visit other places. One of the main pests to be on the lookout for is bed bugs.

Tips For Prevention In Spring

Although there are varieties of pest species that seek to enter your home as the weather gets warmer, there are plenty of prevention items that you can put into practice to help keep these pests under control.

Broken Roofs

A broken roof is a convenient point for pests to invade your home, so be sure to check your roof!

  • Check that the drain pipes are clean of debris and standing water.
  • Fill cracks with roofing cement.
  • Repair damaged tiles.
  • Check the protrusions of the roof and the spaces between the tiles for the nests.

Ventilation Holes

The ventilation holes can provide an easy entry point to your house. During the spring, when swarms of termites start, this can make your home quite vulnerable.

  • Install ventilation screens on hollow bricks.

Penthouses

Your attic is an ideal place for certain pests to establish their camp and build their nests. Pest will feed on wooden items stored in cardboard boxes and beams.

  • Store the items in hermetically sealed plastic boxes.
  • Periodically check the attic beams for damage caused by termites by pressing your thumb on the wood to check if it feels soft and fluffy.

Bedrooms

The bedrooms can be a key point for the activity of pests. For some pests, such as bed bugs, this can be a source of food and shelter.

  • Keep windows and doors closed.
  • Reduce the amount of wooden furniture.
  • Keep the furniture away from the walls.
  • Check periodically for termite activity.
  • Check beds, pillows, mattresses, box springs and rugs for signs of bed bugs.
  • Wash bedding at high temperature, at least 60 degree Celsius, for 90 minutes.
  • Pass the vacuum cleaner frequently

Windows

If left open, windows are a great gateway for pests in your home.

  • Keep windows closed, especially during the periods of swarms of ants and termites.
  • Install a mosquito net to avoid flying insects.

Garden

The gardens can act as a giant magnet for pests. They are full of food, places to live and areas of reproduction.

  • Remove stagnant water from buckets and other containers.
  • Remove stumps of unwanted trees.
  • Keep the wood piles elevated and away from the foundations of your house.
  • Keep vegetation and bushes low.
  • Seal the cracks in patios.
  • Check the garden regularly.

Garage

Garages are not only a good place to store your car, but they also provide pests with a place to nest and act as a springboard for them to enter your home.

  • Check that there are no wasp nests in the corners.
  • Repair any damage that occurs in the infrastructure.
  • Make sure the garage is free of moisture.
  • Store items in plastic boxes, and away from the ground.
  • Make sure all the entries in your home are properly sealed.

Kitchen

Kitchens are an ideal place for pests to search for food. The abundance of food makes your kitchen a free buffet for pests.

  • Empty the containers daily.
  • Check for leaks in the pipes and repair them if necessary.
  • Keep work surfaces clean and free of spills and crumbs.
  • Store food in airtight containers.
  • Empty the sandboxes regularly.
  • Do not leave out the food of your pets when the temperatures are high.
