What is a Bed Bug? Climex lectularius L. , commonly known as bed bugs , are flat, oval, reddish-brown insects about the size of an apple seed (up to four to five mm long).  “Bed Bug” is spelled out as two words, not one.  A member of the Cimicidae family, these nocturnal, wingless insects bugs are also known as “chinches,” “mahogany flats,” and “red coats.”  Found throughout the world and having existing since ancient times, the common bed bug can readily adapt to the human environment.  A bed bug’s diet consists only of blood.  They appear reddish and swollen immediately after consuming a blood meal.  Bed bugs have been known to survive as long as a full year in cool conditions without eating. Bed bugs can be found behind baseboards, in electrical outlet plates, in furniture, in the seams of mattresses, and even in picture frames.  They often travel from...

A member of the scientific order Hymenoptera, bees are winged insects found throughout the world. With more than 20,000 recorded bee species, bees range in size from less than 2 mm to 3.9 cm long.  The coloring of a bee is usually either black or brown with yellow, red, or lustrous blue stripes.  Bees can be solitary or social depending on the species.   There are three castes in a bee colony: male drones, infertile female worker bees, and the queen bee.  The queen bee will mate and lay eggs during her entire lifespan.  The lifespan for honey bee queens is up to five years, but most queens will only live two to three years.  The sole task of a male drone is to fertilize the queen; once accomplished, the male drone will die.  Female worker bees, on the other hand, perform several important tasks necessary for the colony’s survival....

b2ap3_thumbnail_podcast-cover.jpg
Termites on the East Coast: A Layman's Guide to Eastern Termites By far, the most common species of termite throughout the whole of North America, specifically on the Eastern Coast, is the eastern subterranean termite (Reticulitermes flavipes). Most commonly classified as a pest the eastern subterranean termite often invade the wooden apparatuses within homes most exposed to soil. They make up roughly 80 percent of the $2.2 billion spent annually on termite control alone and remain a problem because they feed on wood cellulose, destabilizing foundations and often going unnoticed for extended periods of time. Of course they aren't the only type of termite to be found on the eastern coast, all three of the most common, North American termites, the formosan, the subterranean and the drywood termite, respectively, can all be found, at some point, along the eastern coast, specifically in Florida which is very heavily populated by all...

Strength in Numbers: Meet the Termite

b2ap3_thumbnail_Termites-680.jpg
b2ap3_thumbnail_termite-eBook.png
What have been around since dinosaurs roamed the Earth, are harmless when considered individually, but as a species cause approximately five billion U.S. dollars in property damage every year?  If you guessed termites, then you are correct.  An individual termite is practically harmless, but together with their extended family (which can number anywhere from a few hundred to thousands) termites can eat the value right out of your home.  Literally!   Termites may be small in size, but this species (which weighs more collectively than the entire human race) can infest your home and multiply so fast they make rabbits look like Shakers.  In the blink of an eye, your home can go from infested to condemned if the infestation is not caught early and eliminated. Termites Eat Wood, and They Don’t Ask First Cellulose, especially the cellulose found in wood, is a termite's primary and most available food source.  ...

Bedbugs : it’s a subject that no one really talks about. Use Residential Pest Control to Combat Unwanted Critters in Your Home

b2ap3_thumbnail_dec-4-home.jpg
October is now upon us. And we all know what that means – not only is it time for pumpkin pie, fallen leaves, and Halloween candy, but it's also the time when all the ghoulish creatures of our nightmares come out. For little kids, this means ghosts, goblins, witches, and monsters might haunt their dreams. But for adults, this might mean that bats, birds, mosquitoes, roaches, and rodents haunt our houses. In movies and mythology, these forces can be fought by paranormal investigators, or “Ghostbusters” of sorts. But for those other pests that haunt our home in reality, the “ghost buster” in those cases is residential pest control. Although less scary, these real life  pests  can be just as difficult to deal with. And the process for getting rid of them follows the same general idea - “ If there's something weird and it  don't look  good, who  ya ’ ...

Be Kind to Bats and Call a Bat Removal Service in NJ

b2ap3_thumbnail_dec-2-pest.jpg
Although one bat in their house is enough for most people, a family of five bats is really intimidating. However, they are living creatures, and deserve to be evicted humanely without the use of pesticides. Since human safety is important too for  bat removal services in NJ , the use of chemical sprays should only be used in rare circumstances.  To some people, they aren’t the cutest animals in the world, but bats aren’t pests. It’s interesting to note that they are important to the environment, because they eat insects. Which reduces the need for pesticides. A reputable bat removal service knows this.  In New Jersey, a bat removal service  deals  with two common bat types that get into the homes of residents and sometimes scare the heck out of them.  Image courtesy of Victor Habbick at  FreeDigitalPhotos.net   The most common bats found in the New Jersey area are...

Terminate with Termite Control

They’ve been around since the dinosaurs, but you won’t find them cheered on in movies, children’s book or television shows; in fact most people want them extinct. That is easier said than done when it comes to termites. These tiny pests are resilient; some colonies can be 300 feet long and have more than two million termites; all of which work around the clock. They multiply by the thousands; their queen lays 20 to 30 thousand eggs a day. Therefore, termite control is needed the moment these invaders are spotted or better yet, preventive measures in place preventing your wallet from being chomped on. When a species has been around for millions of years it learns a few things. It is estimated there are more than three thousand types of these six legged destroyers, some with wings they shed after they find a good area to ravage. They are a...

Roach Control 101

b2ap3_thumbnail_oct-25-roach.jpg
Roach control. When people think of pest control, these little guys are usually what they think about first.   With a well-earned bad reputation, these little pests can be a homeowner’s worst nightmare. In New Jersey alone there are five different species of roach that can be found in a home, restaurant, school, or office building.  And depending on the species, they can eat anything from rotten fruit and vegetables, to other types of food and organic materials. And even if you only see the one, there’s a good bet your house is infested with a lot more. Just the sight of one makes anyone shudder and their skin crawls. More than just the ick factor though, having a roach infestation can be hazardous. Roaches can be carriers of infectious bacteria and the allergens they carry can cause allergic reactions and asthma attacks. And unlike other insects, they have almost no other...
